Climate Change Engagement with People of Colour in the UK with Dr. Charles Ogunbode

Climate Change Engagement with People of Colour in the UK with Dr. Charles Ogunbode

Within UK climate policy, research, and organizing efforts, inclusivity has been a longstanding challenge. A prevailing assumption among environmental organizations and policy actors was that climate change held limited concern for people of colour. Contrary to this belief, our groundbreaking study of individuals from diverse backgrounds has unveiled a stark reality.

The SPOTLIGHT project presents findings that challenge preconceived notions. An overwhelming majority of people of colour in the UK acknowledge climate change as a human-caused reality, are highly concerned about its effects, and have altered their lifestyles to reduce environmental impacts. Furthermore, the findings underscore the lack of diversity in the environmental sector with only one in five participants having participated as members in environmental organizations. Most respondents hadn't previously encountered the term ‘climate justice’, but they support its core principles; understanding that climate change disproportionately affects the poor, exacerbates inequalities, and demands greater representation from frontline communities in climate solutions.

In this session, Charles will unpack how the study sheds light on climate change engagement among people of colour in the UK, emphasizing the need for greater inclusivity, representation, and new patterns of climate change advocacy and policy creation.

About Charles Ogunbode

Dr. Charles Ogunbode is an Assistant Professor in Applied Psychology at the University of Nottingham, UK. Charles studies social and psychological influences that shape people’s beliefs, emotional responses and action tendencies on environmental issues. His research spans a range of topics including climate anxiety and wellbeing, climate justice, the roles of extreme weather experiences and information exposure in public engagement with climate change, as well as investigating how climate change impacts vulnerable and marginalized groups (including ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, and people living in low-income communities).

Charles holds a PhD and M. Res in Psychology from University of St. Andrews.

Climate Joy Poster Fair

Hi all, it is with great regret to let everyone know that we have had to cancel the Climate Joy Poster Fair as we did not meet the minimums required for the venue. However, if you would like to join us for an informal dinner, please email us at info@diversityinsustainability.com - we will be going to The Champion at 1 Wellington Terrace (closest tube stops: Notting Hill Gate and Queensway) from 7-9PM on Tuesday, October 10. We’ll hopefully see you then!

In a world brimming with challenges, it's crucial to carve out moments to appreciate, celebrate and reflect on our individual and collective accomplishments. This event is a tribute to those wins – a space to share successes and learnings while reveling in the journey. At this event hosted by Diversity in Sustainability, The Now Work, and Toast, we'll hear from members of the community about what they've learned, discovered, and experienced this year about making a meaningful impact. We'll have time for all attendees to reflect on their own impact and share insights and wins via their own posters. Sit back and get inspired by the amazing work of others, or get involved and present your own discoveries - whether it is composting in your garden, an educational social media campaign, an immersive climate event, helping a client with climate scenarios, making a policy change, helping your community address climate doomism or developing a new sustainable product, there's no limit on type of climate joy you can share.

We will provide a piece of A3 art card and markers for you to write or draw something you’ve learned about or found to be particularly effective in your personal or professional life to address the climate crisis. Feel free to bring your own art supplies and stationery (e.g. pictures, washi tape, stickers, etc.) to illustrate your climate wins! Think primary school 'poster fair', but with drinks and food!

Cost: £12, includes a drink, food, supplies

Date: Tuesday, October 10, 2023, 6-9PM

Location: 17-19 Triton Square, London, NW1 3BF

Building Touchpoints for Equity in Higher Education (in-person)

BIPOC/BAME youth are disproportionately affected by social and environmental injustice and are interested in sustainability but face many barriers in accessing the sector. How can we help in higher education?

Join Humber College and Diversity in Sustainability for our first in-person Inclusion Blueprint Dialogue: Building Touchpoints for Equity in Higher Education.

This session is meant for staff and faculty in postsecondary institutions in roles that impact students' academic experience and career prospects in sustainability, and students themselves.

The in-person, three-hour session will provide a space for higher education professionals to connect with one another, discuss their programs and resources, and gain knowledge that can help make the field of sustainability more inclusive, starting with higher education.

A preliminary literature review will be sent to attendees in advance to ground our thinking.

Key questions guiding the session are:

• What unique challenges do you face in admissions, faculty and career services in engaging diverse students in sustainability programs? If it hasn’t been a challenge, why not?

• What have you/your institution been doing specifically to attract, engage in sustainability programs and support diverse students in their job search after graduation?

Lunch will be served at the event.
